Moraine Lake
Your guide leads you safely by headlamp to a spectacular viewpoint for sunrise over the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Sip a hot drink as your guide shares the valley’s history and ecology, and offers photography tips for the perfect shot. Most guests stay 1.5 to 2 hours, with time to explore the lakeshore trails.

How physically demanding is this tour?
This one’s an easy day. You’ll do some light walking on uneven ground at each lake, nothing strenuous, but a reasonable level of mobility makes it more comfortable. If you can handle a gentle stroll, you’ll be more than fine.
Is breakfast included in this tour?
Yes, and it’s a proper breakfast, not just a granola bar. We bring along a croissant and specialty coffee or tea from Bare Bistro in Banff, so you can enjoy it right there as you come down from the sunrise experience. It’s a genuinely lovely way to ease into the rest of the day.
Why is this tour more expensive than the Best of Banff?
A few reasons. This one is fully all-inclusive, so breakfast, headlamps, and hot drinks are all taken care of with no upgrades needed. Securing exclusive early morning access to Moraine Lake takes some serious logistics behind the scenes. And the experience itself is in a different league. Standing at those lakes at sunrise before the crowds is genuinely world-class. We think it’s worth every dollar.
Why is Moraine Lake access so restricted in summer?
Too many people, simple as that. Parks Canada closed the road to private vehicles to protect both the ecosystem and the experience itself. These days the only ways in are the Parks Canada shuttle (which books out weeks ahead), cycling up, or coming with a licensed guided tour like ours. It’s one of those rare cases where the restriction genuinely makes the experience better.
Are headlamps included?
Yes! We provide headlamps for the pre-dawn walk up to the Moraine Lake rockpile viewpoint. No need to pack your own or remember to buy one.
Is canoeing included?
Canoe rentals at Lake Louise are available right on-site, though they aren’t included in the tour price. Mornings are the magic window here, when the water is often perfectly glassy and calm before the wind picks up, so it’s a beautiful time to get out on the lake. Just ask your guide about availability.
Is this tour suitable in bad weather?
Yes, and Moraine Lake in low cloud or light rain is honestly still stunning. Some of the most dramatic sunrise photos come from those moody mornings, when the mist hangs over the water and the peaks come and go. We run this tour rain or shine.
Do I need warm clothing for this tour?
Even in summer, yes, one hundred percent. Pre dawn at Moraine Lake can hover near freezing in May, June, and September. Bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves no matter what month you’re visiting. The van is heated and you’ll warm up nicely once the sun comes over the peaks, but that first hour can be seriously cold.
Is the National Park Pass included?
It’s not included, so you’ll want to sort that out before the tour. You can grab one at the park gate, the visitor centre in Banff, or online at pc.gc.ca.
