Two things that are spectacular on their own and even better together: a headlamp hike through Johnston Canyon’s frozen waterfall formations after dark, followed by stargazing beneath Banff’s incredible winter skies, either at Vermilion Lakes or the Mt. Norquay viewpoint, wherever conditions are best on the night. All the winter gear is provided too, including crampons, hiking poles, and headlamps. It makes for a genuinely magical evening out.
After dark, that’s the whole point. You’ll head out once it’s properly night so the stars are at their brightest and most visible. Exact departure times vary by season and are confirmed when you book.

Yes, and it really should be. The frozen canyon and the dark sky stargazing only come together in winter. It’s one of those experiences that’s completely specific to the season, and all the more magical for it.
Sometimes, yes! Banff’s dark skies and the Mt. Norquay viewpoint are great spots when solar activity is high. We can’t promise it, as aurora sightings come down to space weather, but your guide will know if conditions look promising and will position the group for the best possible chance.

Pretty manageable, honestly. It’s a well maintained catwalk rather than a wilderness trail, with just a few moderate inclines along the way. The crampons make the icy sections easy to handle, so most fitness levels can do it comfortably.
